This is oddly specific. I'd love to hear the backstory.

He will be teased.

No, it will peg him as Catholic. It sounds like a Pope.

Catholic and Christian, same thing.

I love it. I am Catholic and I loved Pope John Paul II. I would keep it as two separate names with no hyphen.

My DH wanted to name our son John David (as a first name). I wouldn’t even entertain the idea because I thought he would be made fun of by other kids at school.

It’s really more of a Southern and French practice. There aren’t too many kids walking around our area with two first names.

It provides options. He can go by John-Paul, just John, just Paul, or JP.

I love it. I like double names too because of the novelty of them. You don't hear them every day which makes it a pleasant surprise when you do.

My daughter has a hyphenated first name in honor of my husband's mom. We have never had any *major* issues with it. The only annoyance is that the format will vary by document because certain computer systems cannot handle hyphens or spaces. Your son's legal identification and mail will say John-Paul, John Paul, JohnPaul, and Johnpaul. The name on the birth certificate is ultimately what your child's legal name is though.

My daughter likes the hyphen because it makes it more clear to other people that the second name is part of her first name and isn't her middle name. She hates when her name is shortened.

Thank you for the honesty. Frat bro is definitely not the feel we're going for. The nn JP kind of makes me cringe (which makes me second guess using the name because I know that he could choose to go by it when he's older).
Definitely go with John Luke then. I've never heard of anyone being called JL. Certain initials just don't flow well enough.

You're very aggressively naming him after the pope, but if you're a practicing Catholic family no one will bat an eye at that. I am Catholic and knew two JPs growing up. And yes, he will 100% go by JP.

I knew this kid and he was a lot of fun, until sadly he was not.

Terrible. Confusing. Too much punctuation. Paints him in a corner.

It looks like you're trying to use Jean Paul but Americanized it.
