Disagree with the above regarding MIT, Princeton, & Stanford as well as for Caltech.

You have to compare the cost of Michigan to another school. In PA, Penn State is about 40 a year. So, is Michigan with 200-250 extra?

For our family that is a lot of money. For others it isn’t a big deal. They have 4 cars, a country club membership and a beach house so paying that extra 250 isn’t a big deal and is probably worth it.

We have a kid who went there...2 years out and has already made half of the expenditure back, and like a PP, we had maxed out 529, so with the gains in that account, it more than covered the tuition.

My kid is there in a program that is one of the top in the country.

It is cold, but it’s been fun and it’s not dark and miserable.

They got every first choice class for first semester and all the classes were good. Second semester was a challenge because they are the bottom of the totem pole, but they got all the classes they needed in the end.

They have experienced do much personal growth being away from VA. They had a great high school experience, but have really challenged themself going somewhere to start from scratch. It’s been great to watch.

Ann Arbor is awesome. The games have been fun. They’ve had a great time meeting people from all over the country.

Could they have gone to a less expensive school? Of course, but they love their experience and we are happy to make it possible.

I was definitely not making a statement on that. Just posting because someone said that any VA kid that gets in UM would get in UVA. It’s not that simple.

Not for us. I invested aggressively in our 529 and made $200k+ for UM tax free. In fact, in 2022 and 2023 our gains paid for tuition in full.

This. We struck many great schools from DD’s possibles list since we thought it was insane to pay that much and DD did not want to take out loans for the extra remaining amount.
