This is an awful mistake. I know this will sound unreasonable to many but my feeling is when schools make this egregious of an error, the student should be admitted.
My nephew was rejected by Duke years ago. It was his dream school as his dad had attended and was very active volunteering his time for interviews. He absolutely had the GPA and SAT, was valedictorian, had the ECs and won multiple awards. He was crushed. It’s so brutal. With that said, he ended up at a wonderful school where he was extremely happy. There just aren’t enough spots.
