You need to start donating seven figures to even get on their radar. IIRC there was a billionaire who spend many millions across many universities to reduce the odds of rejection - so it's not a deterministic process.
Caroline Kennedy was on the z-list at Harvard. They couldn't reject her because there's an entire grad school named after her dad, but they also couldn't allow her to take up a spot when her school ranking wasn't as high as other people in her prep school class.

I say yes. If money is not an issue they can have some fantastic experiences. Depending on the major they can self study enough to place out of intro courses so they won't feel behind in terms of their major level courses

Yes. They are called z-listers at Harvard at least. They aren’t athletes they are donor kids. And they are offered a spot in the next class. If they want to go to the school then do it. It’s no big deal. Plenty of kids take gap years. they are often better and more mature college students
