The cutoff is 3.0.
After that, they use your teacher recs and GPA to determine which students will be invited to interview. So for some kids a 4.0 might not be enough, while others will get in with a lower GPA.

Wow, what a low bar for the cut off GPA.
No kids are getting interviewed with a 3.0.

I don’t think the academics are strong there.
Duke has a bunch of academically high-performing kids, it’s just that they admit a wide range. Also, OP’s problem is that her kid is not the 4.0 student required by Walls and thinks Banneker is too intense. Exactly how precise a niche are we expecting?

Anonymous wrote:It changes every year, but it wasn’t 4.0 last year, and after the cutoff, grades count for only 10% of the rubric. I personally know kids who did not have straight As who go there and do fine.

The most important aspect of the application is teacher recs, so if your DD has good relationships with their 8th grade math and ELA teachers, that will get them an interview at least. And there is a writing test, which should work in your DD’s favor.
I was under the impression there is a grade cut off to even get an interview, and the cut off is close to a 4.0
