Lots of anorexic Gen Xers here. They get it from their mothers. Being slim was the most important thing to that generation of women.

I’m at 35% but I’d love to be under 30%

Curious how everyone knows their percentage? I'm a middle-aged housewife, I try to work out but the most I can manage with a FT job and young kids is not much. I'm thin, but not firm/muscular. So how does everyone know their percentage?

My gym membership includes a monthly InBody Scan. I do this 3-4 times a year to stay on track with my diet and exercise program. I find it far more illuminating than a bathroom scale as it reveals imbalances in strength that can lead to injury. Dexa would be more accurate but I’m not paying for that.

I will share that when I started my strength program my doctor described me as “skinny fat” (low BMI and higher-than-expected PBF), putting my bone density at risk. This was confirmed by my first InBody Scan. I’ve since turned that around and feel great. I eat more, weigh the same, and I’ve lost 5% BF. My clothes fit better, sleep and mood have improved, and I’m much stronger. For me, scanning was motivating and revelationary.

The easiest way is to buy a scale that breaks it all down for you. It’s much better than just looking at your BMI and they aren’t expensive all.

Age?

53; do a lot of walking, daily pilates, have always been on the slim side. I was surprised! I definitely eat my fair share of ice cream, bread, etc.--along with veggies, yogurt, lots of protein. (Lifelong vegetarian.)

Do you have visible muscle? That is insanely low for a 53 year old woman. Was this a dexa scan?

Yes, this was a dexa scan. I didn't used to have visible muscle, but since I've been doing pilates consistently for the last 2.5 years, I do now! Before that, I worked out with a trainer 1-2x/week, jogged inconsistently, but mostly walked ... but the pilates has made a huge difference in terms of visible muscle.

Eating disorder

Not necessarily - I’ve been around 17% the last few years at 45, and in my case it’s genetic- I’ve never had cellulite and I love food and am not the healthiest. I do exercise about 45 minutes a day and strength train but I have loose skin around my belly from having kids. I have definitely gained 20 lbs since my 20’s but my body fat percentage is still quite low. Subcutaneous fat is at 17% as well and visceral fat is 6.

I’m 45. InBody put me at 29% this week. I’m trying to get down to 25% but it’s a slow journey.

According to my scale 28%. I’m working on weight loss right now, after having 3 kids. 42, 5’7 and @155 at the moment. Trying to get down to 145.
When I was 18 and a preprofessional dancer my body fat percentage was @22% but I was also anorexic. I’m much happier now even if I’d still like to lose 10lbs. I’m also much more muscular and stronger in my upper body.

Age 51. InBody scan put me at 25.0% last week. Video pictures back that up. I feel healthy and strong. Still menstruating. BMI 21.
