What a wonderful opportunity to teach that some things aren’t our business and change the topic. I can’t imagine how gleefully you must be reacting to gossip that your kid is so excited to share with you where her friends parents sleep

I have a kindergartner and one of his friends told me all about his dad’s poop.

When my DS was in 1st grade he had to write a journal entry about what he had done over a school break (the journal later got sent home). Everything in there was about his iPad time over the break, even though we had been to a theme park and a professional sports game and done baking projects, etc. 😭 Kids aren’t always the best at reflecting real life.

A friends kid had to do that in class (what I did over the summer used to be a ubiquitous class essay).

Problem was: the family were naturists and spent much of the summer at a clothing optional campground.

When I was a kid, I used to tell people I was adopted. I wasn’t adopted.

My DS in MS just wrote a really good Veteran’s Day essay. Both my parents are veterans. It was a well-written essay. It was 70% a lie.

My kids have literally never told me anything about their friends parents. Maybe because we don’t gossip.

You're gross OP. What do you want people to do exactly?

For what it's worth my kid doesn't come home talking about anything like that. I hear more about what happened during the day (so and so and I did xyz at aftercare, so and so threw up in class, so and so has his own ipad at home!)

My boys barely tell me about their own day! I can’t believe this many kids are coming home and talking about other people’s families. But maybe I just have weirdly aloof kids.

I am a teacher.

One kid shared his mom is a falling-down drunk. Another shared about spousal abuse (in that case, it was the wife who apparently punched DH in the face; later that day at pickup, I saw he was wearing sunglasses in the car). Another kid showed me his hand, where his older brother shot him with a BB pistol.

I welcome my kids to talk to their friends about anything they want/need to.

And trust that your kid's friends know all about you too.

Yes, kids are obviously blabber mouths (but grown ups know that what they say may or may not be what’s actually going on.)

Isn’t it how kids learn about life and various life circumstances?
