If you are looking in Chicago, Columbia College Chicago is the better opportunity for film.

NC School of the Arts (part of the UNC system). I know several alums (40s/50s) with good careers in the various path including editing.

My DD (not a superstar student) went to GMU to study game design, had internships every summer, and was hired by Microsoft before graduation. I just checked: GMU has film editing. https://film.gmu.edu/academics/pathways/editing.

This. Both UCLA and USC are impossible admits. Look at Chapman. SCAD is a good idea but the PP is correct about academics and student body. If you want a liberal arts education, that is not the place to go.

Won’t AI be taking a lot of those jobs - and quickly?

No. Film editing is a creative process, not a mechanical one. Some visual effects work (not editing) might be moving to AI generation, but not the actual editorial process.

Wrong. It is both a creative and technical process. Your child should read up on it. There is a lot that will change in film editing over the next few years. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/07/30/business/economy/artificial-intelligence-hollywood-unions.html

Presumably, film schools are well aware of these changes and will be adapting their curriculum to train students appropriately to new, evolving industry standards and emerging technology.

Yes. Just making sure that OP and her child are not so naive as to think that film editing is creative and not mechanical (OP's words). AI is rapidly developing, and while it is unlikely to eliminate the need for human creativity, it will affect the arts in significant ways. This is why the best education in the arts centers around critical thinking.

SCAD is for rich kids with no academic inclination. Their grad rate is pretty bad because art does take a lot of time and money (supplies).

It works for some people, but it’s risky.

SCAD is a good thought.
