I'm confused by what you mean by "feeder school". If you're truly at a feeder in the broad sense of the word (i.e. a top high school that performs extremely well across the board with elite colleges) then a 3.8 is undoubtedly a decent GPA and schools like Michigan will admit this kid.

Feeder school: sends at least 15% to ivy; or 25%+ to T20+T10lac; or 40%+ to T30.

OP yup about this. We’re in NYC. Kid is a junior and we don’t get access to naviance til next semester. I guess they don’t want people focused on this too early? Not sure. Maybe that’s normal.

Is this your NYC school?

What a weird post tat is. Anyway, I know it's not Horace Mann---not enough students (or U Chicago matriculants).

Is there a reason you can’t wait til next semester which is, after holidays, maybe 6-8 more weeks.

(I don’t think colleges know. Some do, some don’t)

Every application sent has a school profile attached that will explain the GPA distribution and rigor of your student's high school. They aren't comparing your kid with a 3.8 to a kid at a school with honors and AP quality points and a 4.3. They know.

Talk to other parents at your NY private high school.

full pay, humanities, boy.

I feel like it's hard bcs unless you know the HS, the GPA reads so low. And I think places like Michigan must cull via AI now.

Similar kid.
Davidson/Colgate/Wesleyan was a target. Wake used to be it’s tough now.

Lots of safeties - do you want big or small?

Very good shot at one of Vanderbilt, Georgetown, Hopkins.

That SAT is a guaranteed admit for Michigan. 95% of Michigan students score BELOW that on the SAT.

Emory is a target if ED, but if ED really a safety.

If demonstrated interest, very good chance at Tufts, NYU, BU, BC, Northeastern.

UVA is a likely if you decide to stay in state.

What is major?

That is not how it works. SAT score is not the sole determinant of admission. My 3.98/1560 poli sci major was not admitted to Michigan last year; waitlisted/denied.

This student could do way better than this schools. If they want a SLAC, they would be a contender for Williams, Pomona, Amherst, Swarthmore & Bowdoin.

It wouldn't occur to me that Swarthmore, for example, would be better for the study of English Literature or history than, say, Kenyon; that Bowdoin would be better for the study of classics or philosophy than, say, Hamilton; or that Williams would be better for the study of English literature than, say, Vassar. In these cases, the latter schools may represent the stronger choices for these fields. Regarding Pomona, Claremont McKenna may be as strong or stronger for some humanities fields.

Why would he go to MI for humanities? Plenty of better choices.

Not with ED, it won’t. High-scoring kids could even be at a disadvantage during RD, as Michigan will doubt their likelihood to yield.

OP is asking for target and safety schools. These are reaches for everyone, including students from "feeder" schools with great stats. Do many of them get in? Yes. But they are not targets.

Yes normal. NYC schools typically have the first parent counselor meeting in the Spring junior year. It may take several meetings to collect the information you needed. At ours you can only look at it at the counselor's office. Can't take picture or notes.

haha so similar. nyc private everyone is all "just relax" and "it's going to work out" and then it all happens really quickly, "need list Oct 1". I guess it's true that this can take a long time or just a few months. not sure that there's any point in spending all of high school looking at colleges, but when they say there's loads of time, there isn't.
