Agreed! This school sounds like a great fit for my kid, but the tuition is ridiculous.

Look - the 100 kid loss - shutdown - another 150 kid loss was a seismic hit to the school.

They are doing the best they can. They just have to buckle down, show stability and happiness from the families that are there, and hopefully slowly rebound. We are a 9th grade family that left but I hope things work out well for the school long term.

The majority of the US is simply 11th and 12th grade families who stuck it out one last year or two bc the process of finding a school junior or senior year was daunting.

Enrollment in the US next year will be even more painful. Retention from 8th to 9th will be small. Heck, the MS is already decimated.

Not only do the students receive individualized attention but so do the parents. The curriculum is academically rigorous but doesn’t have the pressure-cooker feel like other academically rigorous schools and that’s important to us. When I first considered SSFS for my son, I looked at the list of colleges SSFS alum have attended and I was impressed and continue to be impressed with where graduates are going for college.

How many kids are in the 9th grade?

There are 14 9th graders this year.

Wow, unbelievable.

Yes, there are currently 14 9th graders but we’re hoping the number will grow for 10th grade. The upper school is also doing a really good job at having activities across grade levels so the 9th graders have the chance to socialize with a larger number of students in the upper school.

Uhh the boys varsity just won the championship? Across the board? Hmmm.

The championship of the B division of the PVAC, would be tough to find a worse athletics conference in the DMV. XC had their worst season in years, basketball lost most of the roster.

They won the championship in the lower division. There are two divisions in the PVAC for most sports and SSFS used to be in the top, but had to drop to the lower division this year. It’s great they won the championship, but they faced much much weaker competition to do so. At the varsity level, this was their only successful team. All of the others barely scraped together wins. Basketball will be rough, as the boys team lost all their best players and the girls team has been struggling. Baseball and softball remains to be seen, but track won’t be able to pull together a team that scores. They used to win the PVAC each year. It’s doubtful they’ll field lax for either gender.

I was thinking about it for HS for my now 8th grader for next year.
She’s an athlete though so sports are important. Do they have full teams?

Yes! all of my kids play sports. the boys just won the championship in soccer. My 8th grader will play soccer, basketball and softball next year in 9th.

I am grateful every day to be part of SSFS. The turnaround is something that a story should be written about, and I agree this quarter is like none we have experienced since we chose it. The head of school and the board are approachable and night and day from the past few years. It is the best time to be part of the school because of how they are evaluating everything. It's very cool to be part of a community like this that is really a school but has become so much more for our family.
