Thanksgiving at home is glorious. And we as a family fly at least 4 round trips a year, but not that week.

If you plan strategically, flying during Thanksgiving isn’t a hassle at all. We’ve done it twice in recent years both out of the country and to Orlando, and it was a smooth and easy experience both times.

Um...pretty much everyone who doesn't have their family exclusively in the DC area? Not everyone lives in the town they were born in...And it is a big deal to wait for future holidays--not everyone has tons of vacation time and can travel whenever and wherever...


Have you ever experienced staying home, having a four day break, raking leaves and binge watching TV? Some friends feel sorry for us that we don't have a lot of family around for Thanksgiving, while others are very jealous of our four day break at home. I guess in the early 1900s, most people celebrated Thanksgiving locally and didn't try and travel thousands of miles for dry turkey.


Thanks for this optimistic view. This is my first Thanksgiving since my mom died and I am dreading it, reading this makes it sound like it could be nice and chill.

We are making a long drive to retrieve our kid from college rather than rely on flights, but I honestly think this will be resolved by thanksgiving. Some policy wonks think the 21st is the magic number.

I was supposed to go on a work trip leaving the day after thanksgiving to asia. Cancelled the trip for many reasons, but travel is one of them (was flying dc to jfk then direct to hk, might have been okay but maybe not).

Just got back from Europe and everything was fine! All flights on time, no lines at Customs or security. I was pleasantly surprised! Good luck!

We’re driving to my parents, but our daughter will be flying down. I hope all will work out, but if not, she’s also been invited to her boyfriends’ family, and they live not too far from her. So either way, she’ll have a place to spend Thanksgiving.
