What if you have 10-15 emails to respond to and about 20 minutes to do it in, while simultaneously eating your lunch and finding time to visit the restroom? Rushing still isn’t an issue?

I’m a technical writer. I’m literally paid to write all day long. And I misspell “separate” all the time. I wouldn’t even notice if a teacher spelled it wrong!

At the end of kindergarten DC's teacher gave each kid a certificate with a descriptive award in front of all the parents. She gave one kid a "writting wonder" award. I could forgive her constant grammar and spelling errors in the weekly newsletter to being busy, but on a printed certificate about WRITING?? It wasn't my kid so I didn't make a stink and I was just glad we gtfo of that classroom.

+1. My kid’s ES teacher spelled her own surname two different ways in a document. I assume she knows how to spell it.

I extend a lot less grace to the McPS central office comms people who do this for a living but still manage to make spelling and grammar mistakes without the excuse that they’re watching 28 little kids all day.

OP - I am confused. Are you saying your kid wrote it correctly and the teacher took points off told your kid to spell it the wrong way?

In that case, yes, the kid should speak up. Give him a print out from Merriam Webster to politely show the teacher and tell him to ask for the points to be added back to his grade.
