Yet, when MCPS wants to do things like pay better wages or hire more people, the county council pulls on the purse strings, makes it insanely difficult to get the money, and then complains that it costs too much. And teachers are *still* overworked and unsupported.

That would be a societal issue that believes they can get everything cheaply. Everyone wants ALL students to be able to reach their potential. But, they don’t want to look at and understand what is required to make that happen. Then when they hear MCPS they believe it’s ridiculously high and should be able to accomplish the above goal. Yet no one is willing to give up anything to make that so. More so, they want things privatized but then don’t understand why specialist won’t work for less pay when they can make more in private industry. Or why teachers won’t continue to work for little money. Or why the BOE has essentially a full time job with not even part time pay.

MCPS teachers are paid well for teaching and equal county jobs.

+1 I don’t understand the constant complaining about being overworked. Teachers here are well compensated.

Being overworked and being well compensated are two different issues.

Many teachers often work 65-70 hour weeks. That cuts the hourly pay down dramatically, by over 25%.

I’ve never complained about my pay. It won’t be why I quit. The hours will be why I quit. I’ve already been offered a job that pays considerably more. While it’s a 12 month position, I still won’t work as many hours as I do as a teacher.

Exactly. It’s the “Golden Handcuffs” that keep many in MCPS. Believe me…. If pay were less, they wouldn’t be able to fill many roles with they way MCPS runs things now

Certified teacher here and new to the county (got here after the school year started) and I can’t get a job at any MCPS school. I’ve emailed principals (to no response) after applying for each and every job. Radio silence.

I got two jobs in the last ten years that way. Yes, I did everything through HR, as required, but I also showed up at schools and handed in my resume. I have a special education certification and had more than one principal call me into her office to meet me once the secretary mentioned this.

If you got here after the school year started it’s very hard. Unless there is an opening in your certification area. The bulk of the hiring, now that you are in the system, starts in March. Long term sub positions are a good way to get in and see if the school is a good fit. Don’t be discouraged. It’s not you. MCPS is VERY poorly managed.

But if they are posting jobs, why should it be hard? I already have a Maryland APC and there are open jobs soo??

Are you just applying to postings and sending emails? Imo you need to call. And/or show up to leave a printed copy of your application. Emails are not a good way to get in touch with people if you don't already know them.

This isn’t 1950. No one just shows up at schools with resumes… that’s slightly insane.

MCPS… after applying for a para job (10 years of teaching experience) they sent me a standard email “because you applied for an optimal position, please note MCPS will only be hiring the top 8 candidates and choosing from within unless there’s no 8 candidates to choose from” bro it pays 18 dollars an hour… there’s no top 8 applying from within. Gonna go with DCPS

On the topic of teachers quitting, admin is the reason this happens. If it keeps happening at your school, the admin needs to go.

Conditions are the reason this happens, too: workload, student behavior, lack of support, unsustainable/conflicting demands, lack of respect, parent behavior, WORKLOAD, etc.

While admin can control some of that, or at least reduce what the teacher has to deal with, some is system-wide.

It doesn’t mean they are actually open. Are you the PP? No wonder you are the getting hired. Ew.

DP- are you 10 years old? Grow up. It’s not unreasonable for people to think jobs posted on a school district’s careers page in the middle of the year are open.

+1. My kid has a long term sub for their elementary school grade. Now the long-term sub got a new job. So yes we do need people applying for these slots.

Former MCPS teacher here and now DCPS (I left for the better pay) but the extra $8k I'm getting per year is NOT worth the stress of DCPS bs. I'd gladly go back to MCPS in a heartbeat if there was an opening in my content area. MCPS teachers-yes,it's rough, but trust me, it's much better than you think.

The correct answer is you need to call not email.. the other correct answer is show up with your resume... and leave it with the assistant principal!

Mcps has a weird abusive, data frauding, contract breaking vibe that messes with teachers and lets corruption be promoted.
