My kid was told they do not send 1st quarter grades for ED and then counselor just informed for this school they do. He has one borderline grade- might be first B (quarter ends today). Also no retakes, etc. He is freaking out since all 3 years was all As that this one B in first quarter (which is a high B) and by full semester will likely be an A (teacher always grades papers the hardest 1st!quarter) is going to squash acceptance.


It's a super stressful time (particularly q1 of senior year with applications plus workload) and wishing your kid best of luck. ( I'm the pp whose senior got a low Q1 grade last year). My advice is to tell your kid to take a deep breath and to focus on what they can control moving forward. Focus on getting applications done and get them help if they need it, focus on getting good grades for first semester- because those can be requested/sent to RD schools as well. And good first semester grades can help if working the waitlist in late spring. Good luck!

ED schools generally do ask for them to be sent separately when they're available in November (with some exceptions) and may not be happy but you can't worry about it.


This should not be assumed to be universally true.

My DC was WL at 7 EA schools and each one requested 1st semester grades.

Junior and senior first semester grades are the most important grades for RD schools.

Very few of my DDs EA schools asked for senior year grades last year (she had all her EA applications in by October 15, did not ED anywhere).

That is incorrect and, unfortunately, that was what everyone kept telling my kid who is going to ED.

Some schools expressly require first quarter grades. The school he is applying to does. They also send the midyear and final Senior year transcripts and have been known to rescind admission to those that drop too many Bs.

Early action schools will get a mid year report. Senior year grades are very important. If she can manage a B, I think it will be fine - depending on where she’s applying of course.

For ED schools, they will not look at mid year and most will not even look at 1st quarter.

You need to check your schools though. There is some variability on this.

Some WASP schools require for an ED application; some reserve the right to request. Duke requires.

It’s school by school for ED. OP, you should check. Otherwise, the EA applications I’m familiar with ask for mid-year reports.



Yes, varies by school. Brown requires, Penn and Northwestern don’t.
penn requests them from our private for ED applicants

A C is pretty much doom for a T25uni/T10LAC. They can be picky and they are. If its T60 or lower it is not a problem.
