Step 0 is to look at your practice test results and identify where you are losing points

What is considered good verbal score?

Don’t know if this is helpful but DS took a summer class with capital educators just for the verbal portion and raised his verbal score 130 points. He did absolutely no outside studying.
Either way, your son will have lots of great options available to him.

Look at Colorado Mines, UNM, and NM Tech. There also should be several VA publics that will be workable for engineering.

Get the book "30 Days to a Better Vocabulary" and work through it systematically. It has many of the root words that SAT Verbal tests for.

I wouldn't sweat the score at this point. Outside of the Ivies and a few other highly rejective public and private colleges, your kid will be super competitive and likely get many acceptances to strong engineering programs. Some on this board treat standardized testing like an EC, which I'm sure makes for a fun experience for their student.

If you have the means, hire a private tutor. These tests are preppable. My kid is a lousy reader/writer. Had a bunch of private sessions and kid scored 36/35 on the reading and writing sections of the ACT. I was shocked but there are lots of strategies and tips, and you need to practice them.

Purdue isn’t test optional; they are test expected, so this is bad advice.

Also, look at UC-Boulder and Colorado School of Mines.

I'd also suggest 1-1 tutoring if still a junior. Can do WONDERS.

Adding, WPI has been test optional since before it was a thing.
