Bull sh*t. People go through insurance because they don't want to go back and forth with someone who really doesn't want to pay. If painting is required, the person will need a rental. People like op try to push for the cheapest often less effective repair.

Not sure. If the other driver claims hit and run, will her insurance cover her repairs? At the same time, is she getting cash from OP?

My car was damaged in an actual hit and run, and at least in VA with my policy, the deductible for a hit and run was lower. But that doesn't really make sense in this scenario when the other driver shouldn't have a deductible if OP's insurance is paying for repairs.

OP--how did you find out they claimed it was a hit and run?

I've had this happen both ways--
1) when my daughter was a toddler she slipped climbing into her car seat and kicked the door into the car parked next to us. It was a tiny ding, but it was a brand new car. The owner was in the car, so we exchanged info, she filed though insurance and it was all taken care of. No cost to me, no raise in rates.

2) I scratched my neighbors car with my mirror. I reached out to them to see how they wanted it handled (new neighbor so we didn't know each other well), they took it to a local place who buffed it out for $50 and I Venmo'd him the money.

In both cases, since it was my fault, I left it to the damaged party to decide how they wanted it handled. It never occurred to me to think my opinion on it mattered.

I got in a pretty bad verbal altercation once with a man and his family once after he slammed his door into my car and put a dent into it. He claimed I shouldn't worry about it because my car was a "city" car despite it being in perfect condition and living in NOVA. That really pissed me off. I still ended up letting him go and fixed it myself. Anyway, I would never do that again. I'd file just because of his attitude. It is the aggrieved party's choice.

Did you refuse to provide your insurance info? If so, that would explain the hit and run claim. No way I would entertain "let's not go through insurance" suggestions. It ends up costing the victim even more in time and hassle. Let insurance duke it out. Plus, I assume anyone who tries to avoid going through insurance simply doesn't have coverage.

Why would they do that when they could just go to your insurance? You admit fault.
