I had no brothers or boy cousins to learn from but with two sons who have always loved sports and classic rock, I learned fast. Now I enjoy them more than I thought I would.

Other things we talk about—trips we’ve taken or where they would like to go, their classes, friends, current events, etc.

World affairs. The other day he explained what was happening in Nepal to me. He knows more about it than about 98% of the adult population in this country does.

What's going on at his school, what's going on at my work, new exhibits at museums we like, shows we both like, music we like, food/restaurants, stuff going on with family, current events, religious stuff, etc. So ... everything?

I have 3 sons and I learn to like what they like so I can talk with them about it. That’s it. Marvel, Star Wars, Pokémon, video games, football, a brief stint into baking, etc. I follow their interests.

His career aspirations, current events, nutrition, his grandparents, his teachers, running, teen slang and my illiteracy thereof.

Other sports- in addition to football he follows soccer and hockey. I know more about soccer than hockey or football

Baseball. It's playoff season.

But if he's not into baseball or football, I guess talk to him about fashion, Taylor Swift, Dolly Parton, local drag shows, etc.

My son likes cars, I mean really likes cars. I don’t find cars that interesting but I can still listen to him and watch whatever video he wants to show me or engage in conversation when he has something he wants to talk about.

We also talk about food, our pet, the school he’s planning on attending, places we want to go on vacation, how our days were …. There are other topics.

My husband and son watch football. Occasionally I’ll go in to watch but it doesn’t take long for my husband to get annoyed with my questions or comments about their outfits so I leave. I couldn’t sit through a whole game anyway.

Moms what do you talk about with your older teen boy?

My son loves music and his major love is 90s music before he was born. I love 90s music too so we listen to it in the car and talk about it. He knows everything about the subject. I’m always surprised at how well read he is with the news because I never see him reading it or watching TV.

Find the subjects he really likes and start the discussion.

Food, pop culture (TV like South Park or Survivor), movies like Weapons but also older ones I can recommend like The Sixth Sense, social media and memes. Music. Restaurants, local stuff like what’s going on in the neighborhood. Extended family. School, career and college stuff. Other sports. Driving. Cooking. Home repair.

I hear you, its a current obsession and sad that it could last into adulthood. I try to pivot around football to incorporate math and player stats, talk about pros and cons of how commercial sport has become and then encourage actually playing football building up fitness, etc. (running at the track, doing push ups, etc.)
