Mom of senior here.

Can't tell you how happy I am that my kid took it in June before starting senior year. I think he'd be really pressed right now taking it at the beginning of the school year with increased pressure of a crazy senior schedule and finalizing apps/essays/activities list.

My kid took it last August 2024 and got 1480; DD got a similar score in October 2024. Prepped the whole summer and took it on Sep. 13 2025 and said it was easy and feels like they did better than last 2 times. The previous two exams were much harder she said.

DD said all her friends thought it was way too easy than August 2025. We are hoping she did better than the 1490.

How is this curve done? Overall, we were told by a college counselors August is the worst month to take it in as all incoming seniors take it. Most people take it in August. Counselor therefore suggested September.

DP. There are plenty of seats. The reason not to test summer after freshman year is that the kid won't be ready to get their highest potential score, wasting the scant practice material in the meantime.

+1. It's not like registration fills up the same day it opens. There were weeks or months during registration when the seats weren't all taken.

No, but immediately after the Aug test Dad registered for Sept test and had to travel 15 miles from home. By the afternoon, kids trying to register had to go to Richmond.

Huh? The pp said that her kid was hoping for an 800 despite knowing that they got one problem wrong. How is that the same as acknowledging needing all right to get 800?

Sorry, not buying that. They are ALL applying to college. If my kid wants to take it multiple times and has the incentive to sign up for it in time, I'm happy to support.

We applied for both Aug and Sept, thinking Sept would be a backup. If the kid was sick or overly anxious or we decided to leave town or something, we'd skip Aug and do Sept. Aug went fine but few days before the Sept test, we decided that it would be good to have us much practice as possible in real test conditions. We don't expect the score to be more than 20-30 points different (just based on randomness). But that the kid will become more comfortable taking the test, which will help with December (which is kid's hopefully-last time). (Because at that point, we'd signed up, paid, etc. Figured no downside to using the slot.)

We registered for august and September. Had he done well in August, we would have cancelled. September is the last test before he applies EA to schools. he doesn't have time to keep chasing good test scores or take multiple tests. If he doesn't do well enough to submit to most of his schools, then he will do TO and whatever happens, happens. I can't make him test better so he will end up where he should end up. Also this is anecdotal only, but the August test site was ridiculously crowded and this test site seemed really empty.

My kid registered for a follow on before they took their first. If you need something like an accommodation seat, those are gone if you wait until you get your first scores back. He did June and this one. I know other kids who took their first in August and had registered again for September. Had my kid done better on the first test, we would have cancelled yesterdays, but his score wasn’t great so he went again. Some kids haven’t been taking SATs since sophomore year. I think he’s done no matter the score, because if we have to submit the score he already had to the schools he’s looking at it wouldn’t be the end of the world - he’s like 20-40 points below their average, so we’d like for him to at least hit that average score.
