I like lots of breeds and always thought I’d get a mutt, but my first dog is a greyhound. The word people always use to describe him when they meet him is “mellow.” He’s very calm and quiet and after showing brief curiosity in something, he’s ready to go back to sleep. Two meals, 3-4 walks, some love and affection, and 22 hours of sleep are all he needs each day.

I don’t know anyone who likes dogs who doesn’t care for goldens. People might choose a smaller dog or a less energetic dog or one who sheds less for their pet, but who doesn’t like goldens?

Oh nope. My dad has a pure bred English lab and it's 140 lbs, roughly the size of a small black bear. He's sweet but doesn't know his size and takes out all people, kids and fragile items in his path. Someone always ends up hurt or something ends up broken.

I love Goldens but boy the cancer problem is worrying. It was sort of a thing in my extended family to have Goldens (very large family they grew up with a couple of them), but recently every single one of them has been diagnosed with cancer before age 5.

Are these Goldens diagnosed with cancer all related to each other?

This is why we have Brittanys. Just as adventurous as Goldens, affectionate and cute. But they only grow half as big and don’t shed as much. And because they are smaller they live longer and have better health, overall.

+1000 And you if you don't like standard poodle cuts don't get them. Mine looks like a giant teddy bear. But yeah, the grooming is $$$!

Mixed breed with heavy border collie presence in the genes - the mix dulls the OCD aspects of pure border collie, but you still get very high intelligence and strong personality which makes it more like living with a furry four legged human than just the average dopey dog.

My border collie mix is far and away the best dog I’ve had, and I’ve had some really wonderful dogs.
