We drive Hondas/acuras and keep them 10 years. Haven’t had a repair take longer than a day ever and we just coordinate. This doesn’t count the time DH was rear ended but insurance covered that rental.

We have always gotten rental cars. Just easier with the way our life is setup.

However, we now have a teen driver/3rd vehicle so will no longer need to do that- will just juggle.

Accident- rental from insurer IF you elected this coverage

Maintenance- rental from dealer IF the dealer provides this option

Me neither! I’ve never heard of this. How does insurance cover this?

I think it’s an optional choice and you pay extra for it.

Some people don’t buy from dealerships or they buy used from a private sale. I’m sure she wouldn’t have asked if her car was at the dealerships.

Loaner from the dealer. We also have 4 cars so we use one of the kids cars.

I have never had my car in the shop longer than 5 hours. Choose your cars carefully and plan ahead. I will change out my battery before it needs a jump start.
I don't live far from school or work. I could easily uber, take a bus, or walk.
I have enough money to drive home with a new car the same day if I decide to leave the old one in the shop. I already know my next car.
I'm not saying I'm uber rich, but I would calculate my time, money, and frustration with the situation and leave the junk behind.

What's your next car?

We deal with one car and work around schedules. One of us has a flexible job. One time, after one car was totaled, it took 2 weeks for us to buy a new car and we just got around with one car by limiting our outings and getting groceries delivered.

If it’s due to a car accident, they sometimes will.

Yes, but that’s a different situation. OP is talking about mechanical/maintenance work.

Usually the dealer gives a loaner. My kids car got work done for over a week and they went without. I would likely rent a car for my self, if need be.

Always juggle, but one of us can take a bus to work, we have family nearby who can loan us a car or pick up kids, we offer to drive other kids' friends a lot so we don't mind asking those families for a lift on occasion, etc.
I think it depends on your situation. If we didn't have any of those things I think a rental car would make a lot of sense.
