The money likely isn’t real (eg what they’re seeing in their accounts is just #’s they can’t withdraw, the scammers have already taken the money). We had something similar happen to an older couple we know.
I’d take this extremely seriously and report this to your local FBI branch / office, they’re the first stop for suspected crimes like this. You can stay anonymous if you’d like.
