No American carries their passport or birth certificate with them at all times. So ICE must be accepting REAL IDs. Immigrants often cannot get REAL IDs. I don't have one: I have a valid driver's license that is not compliant for federal identification, because I am a green card applicant. I carry my work permit with me, since it's the same format as a driver's license and just takes up a credit card slot. Maybe I should carry my passport with me from now on, which is such a pain. I don't want it stolen...

I would keep a copy of all of your documentation in the car with you until this is over and consider giving a copy to a relative or friend until this is over. It might seem excessive but it’s better to be prepared. If you get stopped say as little as possible.

They will detain you for failure to comply. There's a ton of videos on social media of white US citizens refusing to answer. Supreme Court said it was legal to set up check points and ask.
