The question was why people don't have enough social graces to not make rude comments about personal decisions that have nothing to do with them, and here you are doing just that. OP didn't ask what you thought about her decision to do the addition.

My neighbors had a beautiful white brick house that was absolutely gorgeous.

They decided to upgrade and got brand new beige siding. Beige. They loved it and would gush about how beautiful it was. To me, it looked like the before picture, but obviously I would never say that to them.

Maybe your friends think your house was cute before and now looks a little garish?

This. They think your house looked better before and are sad about the too big/too modern update. They are also probably confused as to why you'd expand the footprint as your family is shrinking, especially if the addition is hideous or has negative impacts in the neighborhood.
