My DC loved the campus, was accepted to one of their early assurance programs that guaranteed a spot in their doctoral grad program, and was given great merit aid (made it less than in-state UMD). It was his first choice for a long time, but ultimately chose to stay in state and go to UMD. He really loved OU and it was a tough choice.

I don't know about Kenyon or Oberlin, but I have a kid at Denison, and I have been surprised by the number of boarding school graduates. I don't think it has gone down in popularity with that crowd at all. My son has friends from Los Angeles to Martha's Vineyard. A lot are very wealthy. Denison's admit rate this year was 19% (up from 17%) the year before.

Ohio has many excellent schools. Miami made the LinkedIn Top Colleges 2025: The 50 best colleges for long-term career success in the U.S.

Miami used to be the hardest school in Ohio to get in to (back in the 90s). I went to Ohio State then and it was a place for kids who couldn’t get in to Miami.

I went to OU and this is spot on. Loved my years there, very laid back, low pressure, but all my friends have had successful careers.


PP here. I am from Ohio and had lots of friends go there! I remember a really great pizza place on the main street of the school area. Maybe Court St? This was in like 1998, so probably not there any more, ha ha!

My daughter went to Miami University - typically called Miami of Ohio. She and her classmates loved it. 16,000 kids with smiles on their faces in a safe and attractive small town. The school feels much smaller than that - in a good way. Main downside is that it is a little tough to get to - 45 minute drive from the nearest airports. Surrounded by dairy farms.
Miami always seems to have a good sized group of kids who come from the Washington DC area.

Kenyon, Denison, Miami and OU deserve way more attention than they get. These are fantastic schools for nice, well adjusted kids with good but not sterling grades who want to get a great education and don’t want to pay $90l per year. For liberal arts colleges, Kenyon and Denison are the very best possible schools where you can get $25k (other than perhaps Grinnell but Grinnell is super, crazy woke and Kenyon and Denison are not). The Kenyon and Denison campuses are both drop dead gorgeous and in the cutest towns, both near Columbus.

Miami and OU also both have gorgeous campus. Central Ohio with its rolling hills is one of the nicest parts of the US. These are small universities. Mostly Ohio kids but I’d send my kids to Miami or OU before Ohio State. Miami and OU are nice sized colleges where your kid will be in classes of 20-30 kids. OSU is a factory of 60,000 students where you kid will be in classes with 350 students.

Check them out. You will be happy you did.

I’m one of the 15 pct of Kenyon parents paying full price. And my kid got 1500 on his SAT. Wtf!!!
