The tech sector giving each other million dollar salaries with other people's money certainly doesn't mean they have AI capable of replacing most of the US workforce.

That said, tech CEOs are awful, op is correct! They are trying to make money and therefore, AI will be pointed at profit. No tech ceo is concerned about displacing jobs or job categories.
Combine that with the fact that our legislators are mostly so tech illiterate that they can’t send an email, let alone devise intelligent policy to govern the impacts of AI on society.
