Subject: How often do you visit if your child is a plane ride away?
My mom dropped me off when I went to college 8 states away. The next visit was for graduation.

DD went to school in the UK. Visited 2 to 3 times a year. Great excuse to travel and do a pit stop for 2-3 days.

Move in first two years, move out second year because it worked out that way, but DC navigated putting things in storage and coming home solo freshman year and would be fine with that. Junior year DC is moving in solo. Family weekend in the fall and once in the spring each year just to visit. Will be visiting when they go abroad this spring.
I am from CA and we like visiting.
Highly likely DC will move back to DC post graduation.

We go once in the Fall for football, once in winter for basketball and a sorority parents weekend. Plus move in and move out. Yes it’s $ but it’s also only 4 years and we love the town and college sports so it’s fun to be there with her those times.

Some of us prefer to allow our kids to fly and make their own choices in life. We can afford to visit them wherever they land. I'd hate to restrict them.

No, where they went was best for them. While one should make the most of their college experience, it is a step on life’s journey and they should take a step that sets them up for success on the rest of the journey. Doesn’t matter if it is 30 miles or 3,000 miles.
This isn’t the 19th century where most people never traveled more than 50 miles from home.

^ this is sophomore year and my husband is going with him for the first week/part vacation. My other kid is starting school and fall sport (senior) so we couldn’t go with them.

I’m 2 hours away from not seeing my son until Dec 1 
. Study abroad—for various reasons I can’t make a trip abroad this Fall. Last year, I went up twice to visit- (7 hours away).
He does get a long winter break. Last year, he didn’t need to return until Jan 22nd and was home Dec 10 and then finished completely by May 8.
I comfort myself that I actually get close to 5 months with him under my roof.

Not op but this is exactly what I am scared of.
It's a risk, of course. But so is keeping them 25 miles from you and ensuring provincialism.

What? People on DCUM send theirs to St. Andrews or McGill all the time.
Lots of Americans that go to McGill live in the Northeast. It’s not that far coming from the NYC and Boston metro areas.
