It seems to be too late, but dropping the supplemental might have reduced their radar cross section for political targeting.

Very UChicago of them with the games, clearly an effort to get more application money and appear more selective. Not a fan even factoring in the issues that come with essays.

We went to a workshop at UVA and we got to see real essays. They read them.

For large public schools, top privates very much still are.

I wonder if it will cause applicants to tailor their personal common essay to each school? Would make sense given how each school has a different mission and is looking for different things.

NP. Makes lots of sense. Plenty of kids may be mildly interested in a school and the lack of essays pushes them to apply. Sure, many supplements can use materials from essays written for other colleges, but it's still annoying to do for those already applying to 10+ schools.

No. The thing holding him back was he didn't enjoy his tour, but now that there's no extra effort, "why not?" is his thought.

DC wasn’t planning to apply to UVA and honestly isn’t particularly interested in the school. But they figure if it’s literally no additional work, why not apply and see what happens?

I don’t honestly care, one extra app fee isn’t a deal breaker. DC is mostly looking at SLACs; W&M is the largest school on the list. I don’t think DC would attend even if they got in, but it’s no skin off my nose if they want to apply.

Probably a strategic move to increase revenue from application fees and increase their selectivity as well.
