Lots of random murders occur in "safe" places. The entire town of Moscow, Idaho hadn't had a single murder in 8 years prior to the college murders. Countless Moscow residents interviewed stated that no one in town even locks their doors.

I have kept a baseball bat by my bed, but don't anymore. It's not a terrible idea, but it does occur to me that there are two types of people who might break into my house at night while I sleep...

Burglar 1: stealthy and looking to steal things. Good luck, I haven't gotten anything to steal and the dog sleeps downstairs. Have fun. They're not going to come into my bedroom and wake me up, and if they did, they're not looking to get in a fight, they're going to flee before I can get a good swing in. They want my stuff, not me.

Burglar 2: trying to kidnap me, my wife and children (for reasons unclear) or commit a terrible and random murder. Bat not going to stop them.

You would be surprised how many homes have guns in them. No one but my husband knows about ours. We live in a very affluent Arlington neighborhood.

Yep, one under our bed, and another in the laundry room (which is right off the kitchen/near the garage and back doors). We live tucked away where it’s unlikely we’d have a break in, but if we did, there aren’t neighbors close enough to witness something is off. My dad kept one under his bed when I was a kid, too.

I have a samurai sword by the bed and a chainsaw gassed up and ready to go by the bathroom. I also keep ill tempered sea bass in my pool.

I sleep with a hand grenade under my pillow. Pull the pin, throw and duck - pretty easy.
