They make iron on tape too for clothes! This is what we do and I've been really happy with being able to use it around the house, too!

I’ve always used a laundry marker to write names inside clothing and on lunch bags and water bottles

I labeled coats and jackets with sharpie. Backpacks were monogrammed until the kids were old to enough to mind their own stuff (and object to monogramming.)

I can count on one hand the number of things we’ve lost.

Your family is unique, as most kids lose stuff all the time. And we get it, YOU didn't send your kids to sleepaway camp, but millions do. Agree, you'll use way more than 40 each year just for that. Then there's sports gear, jackets, water bottles and so much more.

Taking a look at any ES lost and found, where they accumulate so much they have to donate quarterly, and you'll see kids losing things is the norm, not the exception

Parents don’t scold kids for losing stuff and don’t take the kid to lost and found to hunt for the lost stuff. I work at an ES and parents almost never come check the lost and found. They just don’t care and therefore the kids don’t care. My kids cared because I cared and taught them to care.

Not everyone can make it down to the school during school hours to check. It doesn't mean they don't care or that they don't adress the issue with their kids.

The massive quantity of unclaimed items at the end of the year absolutely means you don't care that much. If you don't come get your kid's $150 winter coat the entire year, it means that he has another one at home he can wear and you just don't care that much about $150. If it were actually your kid's only coat, you would figure out a way to come find it. Ditto all the fancy hoodies. Additionally you have taught your child not to care because they clearly aren't in any trouble for losing the item (or they would come look for it) and they don't actually need the item because they have so many others (or they would come look for it.)

Many of those coats cost $20-30, and many of them are purchased used. You can get a brand name coat online used for $30.

And not everyone can afford time to search for a coat during the work day. They care about the coat, but they care more about not getting fired. That's great for you that you've never had this kind of a job.

Not all kids will listen just because they're "in trouble." About 10% of the kids in school---enough to make a sizable dent in that lost and found---have ADHD. Being in trouble with one's parents doesn't fix inattentiveness. Behavioral therapy and medication can help, but many of those kids are still going to lose things.

Nice diatribe. So are you buying labels for this $30 coat you don't care about, or are you just completely off topic?

Good one. 🙂+1

I love those name bubble labels. They’re so great.

We use a brother label maker that I buy refill tape and ink for off Amazon. I was shocked Ed they stick on fabric and stuff as well as they do. I can even put it on water bottles I run through the dishwasher. It’s so easy to just print new ones if needed.

Labels don't do any good if neither you nor your child bother to look for the item. I'm not checking inside coats to see who the coat belongs to. I'm just chucking it into lost and found.
