The key to a good boardgame is simple rules/easy to pickup, variable gameplay that takes into account personalities of those playing. And bonus for allowing a variable number of players (4-8)

Top of the list:
- Telestrations (telephone game)
- Dixit (storytelling)
- Codenames (word association game)
- Avalon (mafia game)

We love boardgames and these are always a hit. Avalon is the most social but you must have have a crowd that is willing to have fun and not take things personally.

Poker is also not a board game.

Why are so many people suggesting card names when OP asked about board games? Could it be that the phrase “board games” is often (though not always) used to generally mean games played with components on a flat(-ish) surface??? 😳

Even the major board game site Board Game Geek includes card games. Would you seriously not call Boggle a board game when it doesn’t have a board just dice? Or dominoes? Carcassonne which is a tile laying game?

I don't think that's a fair assumption at all. Board games are not the same as card games. We don't call card games "board games". They all fall under the larger category of games though.

Board game cafes and board game retailers include card games like Dominion, Magic the Gatherong, etc. Board game hobbyists and conventions include card games. 🤷‍♀️ so, the point stands that board games often refers to table top games (that may also be played sometimes on other surfaces).

games can be played elsewhere too, not just on a table. Rug, car seat, grass, stairs, bed, etc.. How about "surface"top games?

Sure, unless the game consists of no components like 20 questions.
