NOAA did its job then. FEMA was still doing its job in NC until DOGE happened. Sometimes, things happen outside of anyone's control. In this case, the flood and rains were going to happen, but what humans might have done to warn people and get them into safe places is where we can learn, adapt and protect in the future.

The Guadalupe River is big, not unlike the Potomac, albeit Potomac in the D.C. section is a tidal river. Imagine the Potomac River, the Anacostia River, and tributaries within one hour experiencing rain and flash floods to a similar magnitude. Do you think all the nearby structures/camps/park activities would survive this type of catastrophic flooding in our densely built-up area?


The county has an alert system but either chose not to use it or didn't hire someone to have that responsibility. If we don't discuss this now, then steps won't be taken to prevent it from happening again.

I just think that is a weak and lazy argument. Flooding is in fact predictable, particularly in this area which has flooded many many times. If you are paying careful attention to the locations and rates of the precipitation you in fact can try to predict when and where the flooding will occur. And the more data and experience and research that you put into it will increase the accuracy of the flooding predictions.

The NWS forecasting offices were operating normally at the time of the disaster, said Greg Waller, service coordination hydrologist with the NWS West Gulf River Forecast Center in Fort Worth.

Would you have said the same thing if we had a President Harris (or even Biden)? Nah, you would have blamed Governor Abbott, and if that didn't stick, then climate change.


It was the Kerr county government that blamed NWS because the first alert underestimated the severity, even though NWS updated it several times in rapid succession. The county treated the flash flood warning as “crying wolf”. Then when it rained buckets in the middle of the night the county was not prepared and had not sent alerts to evacuate. The county officials know the history of flooding. They shouldn’t need the federal government to tell them to be on alert when there is a deluge upstream.

This thread is about what happened in Texas a couple of days ago, not Katrina. The fact is, local Texas officials did very little to warn the public after the NWS provided warnings about the rains and chances for flooding.

If a flood like this happened in a blue state, the state and local officials would have, you know, warned the public.

Bush was president during Katrina and that was over 20 years ago and has NO bearing on this event.

Yes, the cuts had an impact but at the end of the day, the NWS did its job. It was the local officials who failed to carry through the warnings to the populace.

No, but you would have. Gleefully. Especially if Biden had made the same cuts Trump did. So you can sit the F down and take it just as you have dished it many times before.

Except he’s the President of the US. The buck stops with him and he authorized and wanted cuts made at NOAA. He owns this mess and the loss of life. The fact he lacks empathy and cannot show compassion says a lot more about him than those of us saying he created the problem. He gave a speech this weekend where he talked about how he hates Democrats. Do you think this is ok?


None of this should be a surprise at all. His callousness was also on full display during his first term.
