There have been several shootings outside the Waterfront metro during peak commuting hours recently. Gentrification along Wharf did not change beefing by young guys in crews selling drugs. Same in Shaw, Columbia Hts and elsewhere. The city has lots of programs for youth but many end up in the life anyway. Easy to catch a stray in DC, wrong place, wrong time. A commuting woman was shot in the Waterfront metro recently, another unintended target. A teen being robbed by a group fired and the bullet ricochet and hit her. Luckily she lived. Other young men in town for do gooder programs have caught strays or been killed while being robbed. Shiny new buildings are no protection. There are notorious drug gangs all the way up 7th and shootings outside the lovely new Shaw library in broad daylight.

Restorative justice has been an abject failure.

Yes. Someone else was shot near the Mt Vernon metro station.

The other shooting was in the daytime - a US Marshal shot and killed a person who (according to reddit rumor) had tried to rob him. No official details on that one because the feds keep things quiet.

This is really sad. I live in the area and don't think things are meaningfully worse than they've been. And they are better than during peak pandemic. But gun violence is a scourge.

I agree they are easy to make. The problem is that the felon in most cases probably should have had a longer sentence in the first place so that they would not be free to walk the street with a gun. Also, the felon has to commit another crime to be caught and charged with being a felon in possession. They will not be charged while just walking around with the gun.

Where he was shot is not cheap, just unsafe. The 16 yr old who was shot was likely in a crew and the target. Gentrified buildings does not translate into safety from strays in DC. Can’t put a price tag on being alive.

7th has been and remains dicey, violent and with several drug crews. Gentrification has not changed that.
