There are TONS of schools in US that will be happy to take him, give him scholarship and launch him in a good career. Yes, even with STEM subjects.

Don't panic. These are actually good enough grades.

His GPA is fine. He’ll get into a fine college and get a good education. Can he get into UMD or other highly rejective schools? No. That ship has probably sailed, so shrug and move on.

If he wants a state school and likes small liberal arts type schools (but you don’t want to pay an arm and a leg) take a look at St Mary’s College of Maryland. Our in-state options aren’t just UMD, UMBC, and Towson.

In MD, College Park is really the only in state option. The other lower level state options are pretty bad while the community colleges are even worse. It’s the one area where I really think VA is the only viable in state school system in the DMV.

So focus on searching for scholarship options, saving more, preparing for loans etc


OP's kid isn't going to College Park from the bottom half of the class at Churchill. OP's kid can attend a different fine state college


a 3.6 gpa--a B+ average-- is bottom half of the class?

Geographic diversity is your friend, OP.

With that GPA, he's shut out of all the decent colleges in your area, BUT he's not shut out of decent colleges elsewhere in the US who are looking for geographic diversity. Start loving Midwest State U.

I’m assuming you mean he has a 3.5 Cummulative GPA after Sophomore year. If so, Why are you reeling? For a B+ gpa? That seems overly dramatic.

The are plenty of good colleges. If he wants to go, why would he not be able to with a B+ GPA?
