That didn't add up for me either. Maybe because I assumed the helicopter was for Cady first....but it was for Harris?? Did Cady get picked up by a helicopter? Harris did abscond, but where did he get that hat?? I let it go when I watched, but since someone else noticed....

Haha, yes! I have no idea whose kid is whose so far.

I read the novel We Were Liars AND I have read Flowers in the Attic. WWL is not derivative: it is so well-written, and the twist was really unexpected and shocking. The novel is written in such simple, spare language that is somehow lyrical just the same. It's really fresh and different, and well-written in a way you don't normally see for YA.

Flowers in the Attic is a completely different story, and isn't very well-written at all. Aside from having some blonde characters, there are no similarities.

This is why the series makes me so sad. It had such potential. And they messed it up so badly. It's almost obscene. I REALLY loved the novel.

Oh this is crazy to hear after watching the series. The level of repetition in the flashbacks and narration is mind-numbing for me. The writing and dialogue (in the series) sucks. I wish it had been a little shorter and tighter.

Yes, it makes me so sad because I really love the novel. I'm a high school English teacher, and when I first discovered and finished the novel in 2014, I immediately insisted that everyone else in my department read it. The series makes me feel as if a child I care about has been somehow exploited.

Please read the book. It's a fast, easy read. You'll like it.

I don’t get this read at all. Does their decision make more sense in the book?! Pyromania and recklessly killing animals are not things to feel sorry for perpetrators about.

I don't feel sorry for them in the book. They are all awful people. And Cady knows it. That's part of the point.

You don't have to like the characters to enjoy the novel. For example, every character in Wuthering Heights is extremely unlikeable, but I love that too.

I agree but was curious based on what you said about it being like a child you care about!

My thoughts:
Cady has awful hair. That blonde looks cheap and brassy. I saw the preview for her dark hair and that looks yucky too.

Calling them “the liars” is so weird and not very believable imo. “Littles” makes sense, “teens” would be more apt I guess.

The old dad/grandpa is so weird. Like he lords over his kingdom and just demands other people do his bidding? Maybe that’s what uber rich people are like but I would have assumed dude had a lawyer on call he could have used to deal with the party boat.

Did all 3 swim back from the party boat?? That seemed really far. Maybe I’m just a bad swimmer lol.

The trashy tradwife was clearly unhappy and knew she was trouble.

I’m looking forward to watching the rest!

Yes! She looks trashy and cheap, and it is also a high maintenance (though trashy) look. Bleached hair would be terrible for a summer in the sun and saltwater. In the book, the Sinclair girls/women were all effortlessly beautiful in a kind of WASPy, effortless way. They were natural blondes, with "square chins" (this is a significant detail for the second novel in the series, Family of Liars, in which one of the aunts is made to have jaw surgery to fix her weak jawline; it turns out she isn't really a Sinclair, and the mom/step dad does it to make her blend in because the weak chin makes her look "foolish"). None of the Sinclairs from the novel would EVER get something so cheap and obvious as a bleach job. Also, none of them have brown eyes or thick black eyebrows.

Cady looks kind of trailer-park rock'n'roll in the series, not WASPiy elite.

That will all make sense.

In the novel, it was never made clear why they were called "the liars." The author originally included an explanation, but it was edited out of the novel before publication.

To be honest, I was so disappointed with the series I wasn't even able to watch the final episodes carefully enough to see if they ever invented a reason just for TV. Did they add something about why they were "liars" for the series?

Major spoiler alert ahead!!!!

For me the freshness was the ending, like a horror movie about a band of psychos disguised as mostly normal kids. It made the grandparents seem amazingly well-adjusted, and I’d say the mom too but one line hinted at them also being psycho.
