I actually like the name. I have a neighbor that named her son that because it was her family’s surname. I’ve seen a few girls named that but it’s a pretty popular name for boys , it was 392 last year on the SSA list.

Also I guess the name could be pronounced as WILLder but that sounds too much like Wilbur and any name that constantly gets mispronounced and misspelled and misunderstood is a terrible burden to put on a DC.
The parents who consider Wilder want to raise a feral wild child and will go ahead and give him some ridiculous middle name like Trigger or Ransom or Danger and will make sure he grows a mullet by 4. Wilder will run around in plastic Western boots, a Kool Aid stained licensed character t shirt and leggings. “He’s all boy” will be the highest compliment t you can give Wilder.
I know you weren’t suggesting this as a name, but I think I’d prefer Feral to Wilder.

If I had a boy with my current partner I would consider this. My partner is in wildlife conservation. I don’t think I’d name a girl this. Also always the risk he has adhd and then unfortunately fulfills the wild part…

My DH is now very interested in this name for potential future kids of ours, but I honestly think it sounds a bit like the parents are trying too hard to be “edgy” or “cool”. I don’t mean to offend anyone on here, but what are peoples thoughts? There’s just something about it I don’t like, but it’s hard to explain why.
Why would you do this to your child? I’m all for unique and meaningful names, but Wilder is really awful.

I was at a National Park once.and overheard a mother talking to her young twin girls-- Wilder and Bronte -- and all I could think was, "Were you an English major?"
I know a few families whose kids have very unusual names, as in they are the only people I have ever met with those names or I've only met one other person with that name. They are in some ways as equally head-scratching to me as Wilder. But in all thesecases, the families had very specific reasons for choosing the names that were much more personal than just thinking it sounded cool. Think the name of a place that had specific importance to a parent, for example.

Your husband is probably imagining your child being named “Wilder” among a sea of children named Michael, Jacob, Sebastian, Sophia, Olivia, and Emily. He probably thinks “Wilder” will stand out as a romantic and sophisticated name.
But what will really happen is that your child will be named “Wilder” among a sea of children named Jett, Jagger, Kash, Justice, Hadley, River, Brixton, Beckett, and Oakley.
