OP, I love Cape Cod. We go out for most dinners, go to whatever beach we want - even if we have to pay -horrors! - $15 a day for a pass. And I like to take one afternoon and shop around in Chatham. Don't usually buy much but it sure is fun to look and buy a little fugdge.
Your friends sound really lame.

Check out Mayflower Beach in Dennis in the evening. It's spectacular!

Some of the people who are on this board are pretty snide.

I don't get the people dumping on OP (though her tone was a little harsh). Who wants other people to control their behavior to this level while on vacation? I can't imagine a friend getting huffy at me if I wanted to browse in a shop or buy them a drink. That would sour the trip for sure.

OP, I sympathize! Weird that no one would agree to browse or take you up on the drink. I wouldn't enjoy this either.

I would do one of two things: (1) announce you are going to drinks / dinner / shopping / whatever and anyone is welcome to join (and then enjoy it !!) or (2) make up a reason to leave and get a hotel somewhere or go home and enjoy a staycation.

You often need a parking pass or you have to pay for parking. Depends on the beach.

Grew up spending summers on the Cape and still have a family house there. The beach thing makes sense. There is no need to pay to go to different beaches when most are the same or you're sitting in traffic to get to them.

Other than that, I'm assuming you knew what these friends were like, right? Do they normally go eat out and drink and go shopping in every day life and suddenly don't want to on vacation? Probably not. So either you should have known what to expect or you should have declined.
