+1 to Lowe’s and Home Depot. I don’t know about barely used but they are always really nice and clean in any town.

These are my go to bathrooms and have been from the days my kids were little to now with my more frequent, older bladder.

Guitar Center…don’t seem to be used much since people are there specialty shopping and no random traffic, but there’s always one there. Usually a one seater though.

Also Subway, there’s tons of them around and they have to have a bathroom.

Friend of mine has developed an app that provides the codes for restrooms at places where codes are required. Look into it.

I have found some great ones in rando business park office buildings.

The best public restrooms are the ones that either (1) have a militant and enforced bathroom cleaning schedule, or (2) get little use but are well maintained.

This is why fast food bathrooms tend to be pretty okay (corporate ownership or struct franchise agreements, militant schedule, reasonable high standards for cleanliness) but gas station bathrooms are often horrible (usually individually owned with low expectations for cleanliness).

Furniture stores have nicer bathrooms a than malls or department stores because it doesn't occur to people that they have bathrooms. Whereas malls are full of kids and caretakers looking for bathrooms. Room & Board has particularly nice bathrooms.

Bookstore chains often have great bathrooms, and increasingly indie bookstores have even nicer ones, because they want to encourage people to linger.

Grocery store bathrooms are trash. Including Whole Foods, Moms, Yes, and TJs. They get frequently used by unhoused people as showers and places to hang out. I once got trapped in a WFs bathroom with my daughter because a woman came in while we were in a stall and started screaming and saying violent, scary things. I wound up texting my husband, at home, to please call the store management or 911 to come deal with her, because I was afraid to call myself and draw attention to our presence. We were in there for over 30 minutes and I was scared this woman was going to commit suicide. Haven't been in a grocery store bathrooms since.

Number one, most anywhere. McDonalds, Wendys, an empty Gatoraid bottle. For number 2, on the rare occasion I have to go in puplic, I'm looking for a hotel lobby most every time.

Also, department stores - Bloomingdales, Nordstrom, etc. The Container Store always has bathrooms for customers but often doesn't have toilet paper in them, even first thing in the morning.

I've noticed grocery store bathrooms are filthy even at Whole Foods.

Bathrooms in nicer restaurants are generally cleaner than bathrooms in less-nice ones.

On road trips, my dad always stopped at hotels for restroom breaks. It’s rare to encounter a hotel lobby restroom that isn’t clean or is out of toilet paper.

That appliance store off Prince William Parkway by the target is a favorite, tho. Only one traffic light after you get off 95, easy parking and it’s right by the entrance.

That might have been me! That's my usual choice in a pinch if I'm out near a strip mall.
