Every year when these posts surface, I think how there was not a snowball’s chance in h*ll my (good) parents would have given a moment’s thought to whether my dorm mattress was comfortable.
Discomfort would have been an object lesson in why I needed to work hard in college, so I could purchase things like that for myself as an adult.

We bought our DD a 3” tempurpedic and it was so worth it. The mattresses are so hard and uncomfortable. A good night’s rest can make a big difference. I think we spent about $200 with a summer discount and she used it twice first during freshman year and then senior year.

Look on marketplace for ones being sold. You can get one for a quarter of the new price and they are generally only used for a year or two.

Colleges have replaced all the regular (gross) mattresses we had in college with mattresses that are encased in navy blue plastic. They have almost no spring, they squeak when you move, and they are hot and uncomfortable. I slept on one for a week at a conference and understood why toppers are so popular. It wasn’t just a “bad” mattress, it was kind of like sleeping on a Lego.
