Don't listen to the people on this thread who throw money around. Just ridiculous.

A friend recently went to Europe. They said they did not tip at restaurants but tipped the tour guides 5 euros pp if the tour was good, so a total of 20 Euros for a family of 2 adults and 2 kids. If tour was not good, just a token 10 euros.

I've been to Italy twice in the last year. We tip for private tours - about 10 euro per person on the tour. The tours we've taken were excellent, customized, and the guides often picked us up at our hotel and got us back home. We tip a few euros for dinner.
