That is interesting; thank you for sharing that. It’d be interesting to see updated data, and also the corresponding list of “students picked W&M over <these schools>”. In our case, the two nearest peers were Carleton (got in, was close; chose W&M) and WashU (waitlisted, but would have been similarly close). Would be interesting to see a wider dataset.

W&M is an established national university with a reputable academic record. HPU is a questionable regional university focused on “life skills,” and currently under an accreditation warning.

Yeah, JMU has 22,000 students. That is not really mid-sized. It has triple the number of undergrads compared to W&M.

Elon is private and is definitely below W&M, though not by a gigantic amount. However, Elon's base tuition (before any potential merit) is actually similar to OOS public, so it is fair to consider in this conversation.

Love the TCNJ suggestion - a hidden gem.

Other than being in VA, JMU has almost nothing in common with W&M in terms of school features, culture, and academics. Plus, OP would be OOS and JMU not known for merit.

How..? It's the same size as UVA, a little bigger actually.


I used to live in Harrisonburg and the school doesn’t seem that big to me. Certainly smaller than Tech.

Op here and I realize it was confusing to ask about privates with merit. DD would prefer mid-sized rigorous publics for financial reasons, but hasn’t found any that compare to W&M. In order to consider privates, she’d need merit.
