I agree. She’ll find her people. It’s kind of cool that she has interests beyond electronics. Some kids/people have a very difficult time with that.

When I visit my son's college, I see a variety of clothing on the young women. Most are sloppily dressed. Some are professionally dressed (maybe they have internships and jobs). Some have the grunge look. And some have the kawaii esthetic, with large bows in their hair, or anime characters on their bags, or squishies dangling from them, or cute stickers on their laptops. There are a ton of stuffed animals in the campus bookstore.

This isn't the last generation's college experience. Anything goes, which is a great thing. Whatever her style, she will find her people.

You sound incredibly socially anxious and insecure, and that makes you prone to policing your child and disapproving of any sort of self-expression that isn't part of your extremely narrow and uninformed worldview.

This is damaging to your relationship with your child and it's also very unfair on your part. Your child, as you describe her, seems perfectly sane and normal.

Go to therapy to address your anxiety.

If that is your biggest concern, then you should Thank God for your good fortune. Many parents are dealing with much more serious problems.

I went to the DMV last week and there was a row of huge Hello Kitty stuffed animals behind the desks. I asked the clerk, because you don't often see that in a government office, and she said one of her coworkers loves Hello Kitty and it makes people happy when they see it. It worked for me!
