BBC news, most European news sites also have English versions.

But mostly you need to pay, like we did in the old days prior to the web exploding. Turns out it costs money to provide information.

Another option is going to your local library, getting a library card, and then asked one of the reference librarians to help you with their news and database options. Many can be used from home for free.

No. It's free because it's propaganda and they benefit from you looking at it.
