Completely agree! I grew up in eastern europe and you didn't wear a top on your bathing suit until you had boobs. When i came here and saw babies in bikinis I had a heart attack.

There is actually no link between melanoma and UV. There is a link between squamous cell and basal cell skin cancer and UV. This is a deadly myth actually. I am the poster who said earlier that I don’t see why all kids can’t wear shirts (obviously not at pool, beach, backyard sprinkler etc)… I find both situations tacky (not offensive really). I don’t understand how we have convinced a large group of women that revealing most of their body = empowerment. I know people who believe this and they get offended when I say that it is not pleasant for anyone to see and it is also distracting for everyone in the class, especially young/teenage boys (which makes complete sense to me!). My friends son had a girl in his high school class who came to school in a very ripped/shredded shirt and no bra, so she was exposed frequently but since there’s no dress code at their school (not DMV), it was accepted. I don’t think that attire is appropriate for school.

This will probably all come back to bite me when my girls are teens!

I think it's fine for boys to go outside shirtless on hot days but I also have no problem with girls or women wearing just a sports bra to exercise in hot weather (or whenever they want) and I don't care if they wear leggings or short shorts. And a lot of people seem very worked up about those things, like women need to cover up so as not to offend.

So I think OP's husband and neighbor are being prudes, but on the other hand it's highly likely both those busybodies would flip out if a girl the same age as OP's son went out to play in shorts and a sports bra top, so at least they are being consistent about their prudery.

OP, it seems like rather than crowdsourcing this, you should ask your husband 1) what his actual concern w/your kid playing shirtless is and 2) if he plans to impose all the rules from his childhood on your kids.
