Because dome people want to choose a school that aims for a good quality of life among its students rather than an intense, high-stress environment. What one's peers are doing affects the experience for everyone.
OP thought she was picking a school for her child where her child would be getting a reasonable dose of rigor *and* be in sync with the experience of her cohort.
But she learned that her school claims one approach but readily accommodates another.
I'd be annoyed too.
