They don't. They never have. A non response is as good as a rejection. I think it stinks and they should be more professional, but alas most teams are not.
This is not necessarily true, if you have not heard anything, you should follow up to confirm. Speaking from experience (kid was sought out for top team, but someone forgot to hit a button so no formal offer extended). We didn’t realize there was a mistake until they followed up to see what we were thinking. And fwiw, in other instances, we’ve gotten a “thanks for trying out but no thanks” email.
