I didn’t know you could hate your child while still in utero. What an awful name.

Sarah is a family name, however my name has a bit of an earthy meaning and is of Spanish origin, so I thought it would be a good idea to partially commerate my side as DD will have an American middle and surname. I know that she'll spend her entire life correcting people and they may call her Sierra(we do not want to choose this name). What are your thoughts?

It sounds like a stupid spelling of Sarah/ Sara.

Maybe Serafina and she can go by Sera for short?

Is it supposed to be pronounced the same way as Sarah, or something else?

What about Seren? I know a lovely girl named Seren and it suits her perfectly.

Why do moms do this to their own kids? If your kid is not special enough no funky spelling will make them special.

I would think you were naming her after the artist Richard Serra (1928-2024).

If you must be creative, use it as a middle name. DH has a creatively spelled middle name, and it’s no trouble at all. My SIL had a creatively spelled first name, and it’s a burden. Don’t do that to your child.

It will be mistaken for Sierra all the time. When she says it out loud, everyone will assume it's spelled Sarah or Sara. She will see mistakes on records and accounts. I have a last name that can be spelled several different ways and the mistakes drive me crazy. Go with convention. It's a beautiful name and I think the spelling with "a" looks better too. It's a classic.

What's the connotation?

Fr. Junipero Serra, extremely violent oppressor of California’s native population.

It's Turkish, not Spanish

In my culture, both Serra and Sara are options and have different meanings although I understand both are ultimate Arabic origin. Both are nice, but I think Sara(h) is the easier name to have growing up in the US. When I see Serra in an English context, my brain processes it as Sierra first.
