Kansas really isn’t Maga central anymore than the rest of the US. Lawrence, KS (where KU is locate ) is very cute and KU has a nice reputation.

People are actually moving to “maga-central” and flyover countries places and liking it. The latest area to become trendy and have a real estate boom: Bentonville, AR. Yep, where WalMart has its headquarters and about 30 miles from Fayetteville (University of Arkansas). Young families (including many democratic ones) are flocking there. Google it and stop being a snob.

K-State is beautiful. Nice kids. Decent school. Located on a hill overlooking the town.

Not sure the towns are what you get on these campuses. It's the incredibly school pride. Hard to get more school pride than watching a basketball game in Allen Fieldhouse, for example.

But to answer your question--we are NOVA family and DD is looking for a college that is akin to JMU but that will likely admit her and give her merit. She's at best a 3.25 GPA. We heard that Kansas State might fit the bill. If you have other suggestions, I am happy to hear them.

How is KSU similar to JMU? I have never heard anyone include the two in the same sentence.

It's completely random to say I want a place like JMU and then pluck KSU out of the ether.

My kid applied to some of these. Kentucky won’t be a fit. Merit is based on unweighted GPA. For my kid it was mid 40’s and the cutoff was an UW 3.6. He had about 3.65 or 3.7 and test optional. He got money from Iowa and I think it became a “deal” close to our in state (Pitt). Ole Miss and Alabama need test scores for merit.

Ohio University is a school that the people around me love. It is pretty affordable. Miami of Ohio is also a great school but will be pricey with that GPA.

If you go for urban planning it's a straight line to MIT/Harvard/Yale for grad. school in planning.
