Devout catholic here and I agree with you. The world needed his voice and leadership. To anyone who believes he wasn’t progressive enough, try to understand the confines in which he worked. He was a revolutionary and he will be missed.

+1 a decent man, who displayed humility and compassion toward others. Impressive steps forward under his guidance. Afraid of what comes next.

Yes to all this. Praying for the conclave. Feels like the world is coming apart at the seams and it would be wonderful to have a calm caring presence at the head of the Church.

May he rest in peace with a heavenly reward, but this is a bit much unless you are too young to remember how beloved JPII was.

I’m mildly surprised at just how quiet the Catholic circles I run in are today. One person circulated a news link with crickets in response. Admittedly, I run in more observant Catholic circles where even Pope Francis stated he didn’t quite feel the love. But even my dear abuela who still attends daily Mass and others who are less hard line are also strangely quiet today. This is nothing like JPII or even Ratzinger stepping down.

I always thought it said something that there seemed to be two generations worth of countless devout Catholic families with at least one son named JP or John Paul or (my favorite) JuanPi in the English/Spanish speaking world clearly inspired to honor JPII but “Francis” never did quite take off either in the English or Spanish speaking world.

I've got one cousin named John and his brother is named Paul

The majority of Catholic families I knew growing up had a framed picture of Pope John Paul II on their wall.

I'm Catholic and I liked Pope Francis very much. I'm curious to see who will follow.

The little boy will remember that forever.

I am not a believer, but this is heartwarming.

My condolences to those grieving this loss.

Despite his controversial stint during the Argentine Dirty War, I respect him for his support of the poor, displaced and disenfranchised. He has gone to his reward. Much gratitude, and I hope the next Pope will be equally driven to advocate for our most vulnerable.

NP. I’m really sad. He was a good man, in a world that really needs good men.

The pope died a day after Hitler’s birthday. I wonder if this means anything.

So JD Vance pulled him from his deathbed so he could give the Easter mass ceremony, give Easter service and give blessings to the people in the Vatican Square in his popemobile? Yeah, that makes a lot of sense.

I am sure meeting Vance inspired him of the need to demonstrate personal connection to his Easter message, which exhorts specifically regarding the treatment of immigrants.

Remarkable fortitude. RIP.

The Pope did not “give” Easter Mass, which someone else celebrated.

He did not “give Easter Service,” whatever that means.

He did give the Urbi Et Orbi Blessing (with assistance), and take a tour in the Popemobile, which doubtless required a real effort of will given what he’d been through recently.

I can’t fathom that meeting Vance influenced in the slightest his program, which is in any event composed of longstanding traditional elements and would’ve been planned far in advance subject to his physical ability.
