Pros:
-Beautiful campus
-Charming college town
-Warm weather
-With your son’s profile/education experience, he could quite easily do very well there academically as he will be in the top % students
-Low cost of living and you can probably get them to give him a lot of $$ to go there
-As a conservative who goes to church he should fit right in
-Great food
Cons
-difficult and likely expendive to get there/back. Nearest “major” airport is Memphis and it takes about 1 hr 15 minutes to drive from Memphis to Oxford. I put “major” in quotations bc Memphis airport is kind of small and depending on season can be difficult to get direct flights, especially on desirable routes/times. Memphis does have direct flights to both DC and Baltimore but they will likely be expensive since Memphis is a smaller airport.
-I’m liberal so for me the politics are a major con. Maybe not for you. But racism and sexism and homophobia often go hand in hand w conservatism these days, especially in a place like Mississippi which has such a horrible hate filled history that has become ingrained in the culture. Then again, college campuses even in MS, are more diverse and you will find all types of ppl there. Just a heavy concentration of “good ole boy” types mixed in.
-large class sizes
-heavy focus on alcohol consumption as entertainment since there’s really not much to do in Oxford and no big cities in the immediate vicinity
I went to Oxford last summer; flew American to Memphis and drove a little over an hour (was a very pretty countryside drive, at least the way Waze sent me). Was easy to me (as I’m used to Beltway/395 insanity traffic where it takes an hour to go 10 miles). Flight was not expensive at all. Flew direct from DCA. Stayed at the Graduate. Cute college town. Everyone everywhere was lovely.
Go check it out.
