+1. My DD also trying to determine if she likes U Chicago vibe. Other schools she’s considering are Brown and Bowdoin. She is very competitive applicant but is hoping to avoid stressful senior year. If she like U Chicago snd can find out in Oct re admissions, that will remove huge amount of stress.

It’s hard to imagine many less competitive students would seek out U Chicago TBH.

Not my DC, who is in the top 10 percent GPA wise in their school, has 36 on ACT and a perfect PSAT score, and numerous national awards in their field(s) of interest. DC is doing an weeklong enrichment program at Uchicago during the summer.

UChicago happens to be DC’s top choice. ED0 can potentially remove any stress/additional effort in applying to other schools if accepted in September.

The one week programs and three week programs are easier because they are geared to high school, with no current undergrads. I don’t believe they grade the programs.

The Summer 5-week UChicago program is also one that undergrads at UChicago take to get some courses out of the way. It is a fair predictor of how you will do. They talked to the program he had taken junior year, before admitting my DC to the college; he had taken economics and received A- grades in the summer, and participated actively. He’s doing great now at UChicago, but the classes definitely progressed in difficulty.

My kid was in a different program last year but he did definitely get a grasp of what UChicago might be like, the kids that may go there. The lectures/classes were definitely of the UChicago flavor from what I heard. I just looked at the STEM Neubaurer program and it looks pretty interesting. If only my kid were interested in STEM. LOL

My kid will go to a precollege program with Northwestern. We will see how they compare.

I am just thankful that those are two of the very few schools that offer programs to under 16 year olds.

Resurrecting - DD just hot off waitlist for STEM Neubaurer Phoenix program. Can anyone who’s kid has done this speak to whether the week provides any sort of accurate insight re what Chicago is like, how difficult profs are, etc? Or is it simply a fun week with no relevance to U Chicago experience?

Yes, including 1 of the 4 students I mentioned! Keep in mind, last summer was also quite competitive given that the program was fully funded for all. This year there is only need-based FA available, so more students may decline their acceptances. Your DC definitely has a shot, albeit of course they should also pursue other options. Either way, they can still apply ED1 or 2 to UChicago in the fall. Happy to try to answer any additional questions you may have - my kid’s cohort did extremely well in college admissions overall.
